Upskilling and Reskilling is The Key to Success in 2021

This transformation reiterated the need for employees to upskill and reskill themselves. Here, we share a few tips on how you can not only survive, but thrive in 2021!

Defining upskilling and reskilling

While upskilling and reskilling might sound like the same thing, they are not. Upskilling involves updating current skills that are related to jobs which are continuously evolving. For example, after COVID-19 struck us, those working in industrial cleaning had to upskill themselves to learn about medical-level cleanliness. Reskilling, on the other hand, is when people are learning a new job skill that did not exist before or for jobs that were less in demand. For example, phlebotomists saw an incredible rise in demand in the past year.

Continuous learning advantage

Upskilling and reskilling both involve one main skill – Learnability (the desire to continuously learn). Things are changing every day and it is important to stay updated and change with it. People who constantly upskill or develop new skills will always be at the forefront. You may or may not use the skills you’ve learnt, but at least it will expose you to more opportunities in your career.

Soft skills in demand

Soft skills are becoming more popular. These skills can be leadership, empathy, or persuasion. There is increasing dependence on computers and technology due to the lockdown. It also brings with it tremendous pressure on the Managers and people in the management role to keep their teams together, ensure their mental wellbeing and deliver customer delights while maintaining their own mental health. This leaves them with no choice but to enhance their soft skills multi-fold integrated with the relevant technical know-how that the job demands.

No matter where employees stand with the skills they hone, everyone can benefit from added upskilling or reskilling.
